What size LED grow light to choose?

Author 2021-12-10 10:31:06

This is something that many people start to use LED grow lights are very puzzled.

There are so many technical terms mixed with marketing lies that it is confusing to choose the right LED plant growth light.

So, what size LED grow light do you need?

In order to obtain the best yield, a good experience is to choose an LED plant growth light with an output of at least 50w per square foot of growth space, which can be used as an important reference

The most important equipment in the growing greenhouse is the lamp. Why? Just plant food, you need to provide high-quality food for plants so that they can produce high-quality yields. Due to its energy efficiency, durability and full spectrum, LED grow lights are now considered by most growers to be the best lighting option.

However, even if you know the choice of LED grow lights and related technical terms, finding the right grow lights for your planting project may still feel a little overwhelming.

To determine what size LED plant growth light is needed, you first need to calculate the exact size of your planting space.

The size of the growth space

When growing marijuana, a good experience is to use at least 50 watts of LED plant lights per square foot of planting space.

We want to flood our plants with light (food) so that they have enough energy to produce powerful big buds.

Therefore, we need to calculate the square footage (length x width) of the growth space.

Then we multiply this number by 50w to get the rough wattage of the plant light we need.

Example: I have a planting space that is 2 feet long and 3 feet wide. This gives me 6 (2ft x 3ft) square feet of growth space, and then I will multiply this number by 50w to get 300w. Therefore, in this example, I need an LED grow light of at least 300W.

How many plants can be grown?

In general, each cannabis plant grown requires at least 1 square foot of growing space.

After sprouting, many growers like to put a plant in a large 5-gallon planting bag about 1 square foot in diameter, and then the hemp plant will stay in this pot until it blooms.

This allows plants to grow big and strong without being obstructed by other plants or around the tent. This avoids the frequent transfer of plants, as this will put a lot of pressure on the plants.

Make sure your canopy is covered

Now, it’s also important to understand that most LED grow lights usually only cover about 1-6 plants.

If you have plans to plant more, you need to buy multiple lights hanging side by side to cover each plant to get the same light.

The following table lists how the wattage you need increases with the size of your growing space, and also includes how many plants are suitable for each size of plant growth lamp.

Note: 1 square foot of planting space = 50 watts of LED plant growth lights

Planting space Minimum power requirements for LED plant lights The amount of hemp that can be grown
2 sq ft (2x1) 100W 1-2plants
4 sq ft (2x1) 200W 1-3plants
6 sq ft (2x1) 300W 1-6plants
9 sq ft (2x1) 450W 1-9plants
12 sq ft (2x1) 600W 1-12plants
16 sq ft (2x1) 800W 1-16plants
20 sq ft (2x1) 1000W 1-20plants

* In these cases, the size of the planting space will require you to purchase multiple plant lights hanging side by side to ensure that the entire canopy can receive light.

Note: The above values are reference values during flowering. In the nursery and growth period, you need to reduce the power according to the situation.

Understanding PAR output

PAR Simply put, it is a part of the spectral parameters used by plants for photosynthesis, so this is an important question. The higher the PAR output of the plant light, the more light the plant receives.

The following table is suitable for the best PAR range of each stage of the cannabis growth cycle for your reference:

Growth stage The best output PAR value (or PPFD)
Seedling 200-400(μmol/m2/s)
Veg 400-600(μmol/m2/s)
Flowering 600-900(μmol/m2/s)

Ideally, you need to choose LED grow lights that output PAR within the above range.

This almost excludes LED grow lights below 300w, because they simply don't have enough power to generate the required PAR level. These are the optimal levels of PAR. Using grow lights with a PAR output below these ranges will not cause any serious impact, but will not maximize the potential of plant growth.

Recommend LED plant light
